The Australian Government will be introducing the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa on March 2018. The purpose for this visa to make sure that business have access to critical skills needed for growth should no Australian worker be available. There are 3 streams for the TSS visa:

1. Short-term stream

The short-term stream allows employers to sponsor temporary overseas skilled workers whose occupations are under the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). The maximum employment period is 2 years. If an international trade obligation applies, the maximum employment period is 4 years.

2. Medium-term stream

The medium-term stream allows employers to sponsor highly skilled overseas workers whose occupations are under the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). The maximum employment period is 4 years. A TSS visa holder may be eligible to apply for permanent residency after 3 years.

3. Labour agreement stream

The labour agreement stream allows employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers in accordance with a labour agreement with the Commonwealth. This will be based on a demonstrated need that cannot be met in the Australian labour market and the unavailability of a standard visa program. The maximum employment period is 4 years. Applicants have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency.
